Alternatives for Funding Elections

The following discussion clip is from the Occupy Wall Street demand discussion list.

One of the failures of our system is that people in leadership are not required, by their job description, to broadly research and understand the wide variety of alternatives they have. Here, for example, are some additional options to fund elections:

1. Allow anyone: individuals, corporations, unions etc., to make as big a contribution to “elections” as they want. BUT, the contributions must go to a GENERAL ELECTION FUND which is then distributed according to law equally to all those running.

2. Allow anyone: individuals, corporations, unions etc., to make as big a contribution to “elections” as they want. BUT, the contributions must be identified to the “source” donor ( no hiding behind PACs ). Then, if the candidate is elected, they must ABSTAIN from any vote that would “significantly” impact any of the sources who contributed to them who’s contribution favored them over any other candidate by more than $1000.

3. Allow anyone: individuals, corporations, unions etc., to make as big a contribution to “elections” as they want. BUT, the contributions must be identified to the “source” donor ( no hiding behind PACs ). Then, if the candidate is elected, and votes on a bill that passes, any monetary gain by a donor related to the bill must be paid back to the government.
